Crop losses, loan burden allegedly drive Adilabad farmer to end life

A 47-year-old farmer allegedly ended his life by consuming pesticide near the Chanaka-Korata irrigation project in Adilabad. Police said he had suffered crop losses for two years and was under financial stress after reportedly availing a Rs 15 lakh loan

Adilabad: A 47-year-old farmer allegedly ended his life by consuming pesticide near a canal of the Chanaka-Korata irrigation project at Sangvi village in Adilabad mandal on Sunday, reportedly distressed over financial problems.

Police said Theegala Ramesh of Sangvi village had been disheartened by poor yields and crop failures for the past two years.

Ramesh had reportedly availed a loan of Rs 15 lakh and invested the money in his eight-acre farm. He suffered heavy losses due to poor crop yields and crop failures caused by adverse climatic conditions.

According to police, Ramesh was under financial stress and allegedly took the extreme step. He had left home on Saturday and did not return until Sunday morning.

His family members lodged a complaint with the police. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
