Nalgonda: In an unexpected turn of events, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) security deployment at the Nagarjunasagar Project dam site was withdrawn and then swiftly restored within 24 hours. The project authorities were taken by surprise and remained unaware of the reasons behind the sudden withdrawal and quick redeployment. The CRPF forces were initially withdrawn from the Telangana stretch of the dam, including the head regulator of the Left Main Canal and 13 out of its 26 crest gates.
This move caused some inconvenience and resulted in operational issues for the irrigation authorities in Telangana. However, the security forces were redeployed late on Saturday night at the behest of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, with 40 security personnel from the state pool posted at all posts on the dam. The CRPF deployment on the Andhra Pradesh side of the dam remained unchanged during this period. The sudden changes have left the project authorities confused. They had no communication either from the Krishna River Management Board or the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The CRPF was initially deployed in December last year following an ugly confrontation between the security forces of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh at the dam site. This confrontation occurred when Andhra Pradesh occupied its stretch of the dam and dismantled the outposts. Prior to the CRPF deployment, the special police forces of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh jointly maintained surveillance of the dam.
