Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Cybercrime police on Friday arrested a man from Bihar on charges of cheating people in the guise of sending gift cards using e-commerce portals. He was involved in 22 cases across different States including Telangana, police said.
Rs.3.5 lakh, mobile phones, cheque books and debit cards were seized from him, while orders were issued to freeze Rs.21 lakh in a bank account operated by the suspect, Rajesh Mahato, 37, of Nawada of Bihar.
Police said Rajesh contacted people and offered gifts and lotteries from e-commerce portals.
“In the process, he and his accomplices obtained personal and bank details of customers. On the pretext of claiming the lottery prize and gift, they collected money and cheated them. After withdrawing the money, they destroyed the SIM cards linked with the bank accounts to evade police tracking,” an official said, adding that recently, Mahato and gang cheated a woman from Trimulgherry of Rs.28 lakh.
Based on a complaint, a case was booked and Rajesh’s location was traced. With the help of the Nawada district police, he was arrested and brought to Hyderabad.
