Hyderabad: Cyber fraudsters posing as Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials allegedly duped a government engineer of Rs 10 lakh by threatening him with surprise raids over alleged corruption charges.
The complainant, working as an Executive Engineer with the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department and a resident of Kompally, received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number in July. The caller introduced himself as an ACB official.
The fraudster told the complainant that a formal complaint had been received against him and that ACB officials were preparing to conduct surprise raids. He allegedly threatened that the raids could be stopped if money was paid.
Fearing the consequences, the official transferred a total of Rs 10 lakh to the caller in several instalments.
When the fraudster demanded more money, he became suspicious and approached the Cyberabad Cybercrime Police. A case was booked.
