Hyderabad: Two huge mounds of construction and demolition (C&D) debris that have piled up over the years and became an eyesore along the IKEA-AIG Hospitals stretch in Gachibowli are likely to be cleared within the next two months at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore.

Amid public outcry and environmental concerns over the accumulation of debris and waste in the area, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has initiated efforts to have the mounds cleared. Given the volume of C&D waste accumulated, the exercise is expected to take time and involve and involve significant effort.

The CMC has submitted a detailed report to the Telangana government seeking final clearance for the disposal of these towering waste heaps in Gachibowli. Having called for an Expression of Interest (EoI), the civic body received seven responses from city-based agencies and has forwarded a report to the government.

CMC Commissioner G Srijana told ‘Telangana Today’ that the C&D waste process is estimated to cost anywhere between Rs 30 crore and Rs 40 crore. “The waste is planned to be disposed of on-site under TGPCB guidelines, without generating noise or emitting dust,” she said.

Interestingly, there is no clarity on whether the two sites where the C&D waste was dumped belong to the revenue department or private owners.

Dubbed on social media as Hyderabad’s garbage mountains, the towering grey heaps along the busy stretch of the IT corridor have been raising not only safety concerns but also environmental concerns.

CMC officials estimate that each of the mounds could contain around 2,000 tonnes of broken concrete walls, pillars, blocks, stone rubble, bricks, wood, metals, and other construction material, rusted steel, aluminium, and iron fixtures, and waste rexine and clothes. Officials hope to dispose of these over the next two months.
