Cyclonic rains disrupt life; Ganesh immersion continues as heavy rains lash Khammam, Warangal

Heavy rains triggered by cyclone Arnab lashed Khammam and Warangal districts on Wednesday, disrupting Ganesh immersion processions, mining operations and daily life. Strong winds uprooted trees, damaged property and snapped power lines in both the districts.

Khammam/Warangal: Heavy to light rainfall triggered by cyclone Arnab disrupted normal life, Ganesh immersion activities and overburden removal in SCCL’s opencast mines in erstwhile Khammam and Warangal districts on Wednesday.

Kalloor in Khammam received heavy rainfall of 71.5 mm and Tekumatla of Bhupalpally district received 73.8 mm rainfall from 8.30 am to 8 pm in the day. The rainfall, accompanied by thunder and heavy winds, was widespread with all the mandals receiving rainfall throughout the day.

Braving the rains, Ganesh immersion processions continued in both Khammam and Warangal districts. Officials made arrangements for immersion of idols at Dhamsalapuram tank in Khammam city while in Kothagudem the idols were immersed in the river Godavari and in Warangal the immersion of idols took place at China Vaddepally tank. Immersion of idols took place in local tanks in other places.

Meanwhile, strong winds wreaked havoc at Morampalli Banjar village of Burgampad mandal in Kothagudem. Property damage occurred as massive trees toppled onto houses. Power supply was disrupted after electric poles snapped and lines were severed in several locations leaving villagers in a state of panic. Similarly at Tallada mandal headquarters in Khammam, a massive tree was uprooted at BC Hostel and fell on a tin shed completely damaging it. No one was injured in the incident.

Though the rains helped chilli farmers; cotton farmers were worried as the rains might affect the crop that was at the flowering stage. Peddavaagu project in Kothagudem’s Aswaraopet mandal received heavy inflows.

In the wake of heavy rains forecast, the district administrations in Kothagudem and Mahabubabad declared a local holiday for schools on Thursday. In Khammam a control room with toll free number 1077 and 9063211298 was set up to assist the public.

Warangal district Collector Dr. Satya Sarada stated in a press release that the public should call the toll-free number 18004253424 or 9154252936 to report any untoward incidents occurring in the district due to rains.
