Karimnagar: To create awareness on the importance of tree plantation, Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) organised a cyclothon as part of Haritha Haram programme in the town on Saturday. While the District Collector K Shashanka participated in the cycle rally as chief guest, MCK Commissioner Valluru Kranthi along with Deputy Mayor Challa Swaroopa Rani flagged off the rally at Ambedkar stadium.
About 200 people including the members of MCK governing body, sports persons, cycling association members, municipal staff and others participated in the rally which reached to Frozen Semen Bull Station at Padmanagar by passing through Collectorate, Prathima multiplex, Telangana Chowk, Mankammathota and Ramnagar. All the people who participated in the rally planted trees in Frozen Semen Bull Station.
Speaking on the occasion, Shashanka observed that both Haritha Haram and cycling would play a vital role in changing the living conditions of human beings. He appreciated Karimnagar Mayor Y Sunil Rao and Commissioner V Kranthi for organizing a cyclothon to enhance green belt in the town.
MCK had planted scores of trees in the town during the six phases of Haritha Haram taken up by the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. He also appreciated MCK officials for developing Prakruthi Vanams in 10 places. Karimnagar town would turn into Haritha Vanam, if everybody plants trees by participating in Haritha Haram in a big way, he added.
Appealing to the people to come forward to develop green belt in the town, the District Collector wanted the people to plant trees being supplied by MCK staff at their houses and take steps to protect them. While the entire State has 24 percent green cover, Karimnagar has only one percent, he informed and emphasised the need to grow trees in a big way to develop green cover. Besides improving physical fitness, cycling would help to reduce pollution, he said. He responded positively to a request to develop cycling tracks in different places of the town.
Mayor Sunil Rao termed Haritha Haram as a great programme taken up by the government to improve greenery. About 40,000 saplings were planted by following the Miyawaki method of plantation. Small forests were also developed in eleven places of the town.
