Former BRS MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar alleged that police manhandled and assaulted him when he visited MGM Hospital in Warangal following a recent ceiling incident. He accused the government of ignoring safety concerns and said BRS workers staged a protest

Warangal: Police excess was clearly visible during former BRS MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar’s visit to MGM Hospital on Tuesday, as he was allegedly pushed and shoved by police who tried to prevent him from entering the hospital.

The former MLA, along with a few BRS activists, arrived at the hospital after learning about a portion of the roof falling in the RICU and physiotherapy departments. He was stopped at Gate No. 4 near the mortuary, even as he questioned the police about why he was being prevented from visiting patients and enquiring about their issues.

A scuffle broke out between BRS cadres and the police as Vinay Bhaskar tried to proceed into the hospital. A police officer was seen grabbing the shirt collar of the former MLA and allegedly throttling BRSV leader Bairapaka Prashanth, who had intervened to stop the alleged assault on the former MLA.

During the commotion, Vinay Bhaskar sustained bleeding injuries to one of his legs and hands. As police denied permission, BRS cadres staged a dharna at the hospital’s main gate and raised slogans against the Congress government.

Speaking to the media later, he said the police hit him in the abdomen, causing injuries to one of his legs and hands, and that a nail was ruptured. He was subsequently shifted to a private hospital for treatment, though he insisted that he should be treated at MGM Hospital.

He alleged that the police attacked him at the behest of the Congress government. The government was ignoring issues such as inadequate beds for patients, crumbling ceilings and a shortage of ambulances at government hospitals, he alleged.

Vinay Bhaskar expressed concern that after patients were injured by falling roof material in the Aarogyasri ward recently, a similar incident occurred in the RICU and physiotherapy departments. It was appalling, he said, that there was no assurance of safety for patients at the hospital where they were supposed to receive medical care.
