New Delhi: At least eight people were killed and a dozen others injured when a powerful explosion ripped through parked cars near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, creating panic across the national capital and prompting authorities in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai to sound a high alert.

The victims were shifted to LNJP Hospital.

Sources said a high alert was issued for Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh. According to the Delhi Fire Department, some blast-like sounds were heard before they received information about the explosion.

The explosion also caused fires in three other vehicles.

The Fire Department said they received a call reporting a car explosion.

In the initial investigation, Delhi Police said that after a parked car exploded, senior officers reached the spot. Neighbourhoods in Old Delhi near the Red Fort are among the most crowded areas in the national capital.

Although details of the damage are yet to be known, seven fire engines have been dispatched to the site so far.

Several reports and social media posts are pointing towards a possible terror angle; however, there has been no official confirmation yet.

According to a report by NDTV, the Delhi Police Special Cell has reached the area and cordoned off the site of the explosion.

A few ambulances were also rushed to the spot as several people sustained injuries in the blast.
