Telangana farmers protest power disruptions, low voltage and crop losses

Farmers in several Telangana districts, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s home district of Palamuru, are protesting power disruptions and low voltage. They say erratic electricity supply is affecting borewell-based irrigation, damaging pump sets and threatening their crops.

Hyderabad: Farmers are staging protests across the State, including in Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s home district of Palamuru, over disruption in power supply and the impact on their crops due to inadequate water availability.

For the past few days, farmers from several districts have been taking to the streets and staging protests at power substations. The protests come amid repeated claims by the Congress government of ensuring continuous power supply to the farming community.

In Jogulamba Gadwal district, farmers from Nandine and neighbouring villages staged a protest at a substation in the village. Raising slogans against the State government, they alleged that electricity department officials were not addressing their grievances despite repeated appeals.

The farmers complained of frequent power disruptions and said there was no fixed schedule for power cuts. They said the situation had become more serious amid deficit rainfall, forcing many farmers to depend on borewells to provide water to their crops.

However, frequent power disruptions were damaging agriculture pump sets and affecting water supply to the fields, they said. If the situation continued, the crops would wither, resulting in huge losses to farmers.

The problem was not confined to one particular region or district. Farmers from Nizampet in Sangareddy district squatted on the road in protest against inadequate power supply and low voltage. The protest affected traffic movement in the area.

Similarly, farmers from Nachahalli Krishnagiri, Peddagudem Thanda, Savaigudem and other villages in Wanaparthy district took to the streets on Saturday. They raised slogans against the electricity department and insisted that they would not withdraw their protest until the officials ensured uninterrupted and quality power supply.
