Hyderabad: Democracy has its origin in ancient Greece. The word is derived from “demos” meaning people and “kratia” meaning rule which is rule by the people. The significance of this day is to recognize the rule and power exercised by the citizens. It celebrates the voice and independence of people, equality and justice for all, the fundamental rights provided to every individual.
Democracy is a form of government that is chosen by the people and for the people. In this current age, the development of a country and rights provided to the citizens are measured by what ideology is practiced in the nation.
There are at least 167 countries around the globe that follow a kind of democracy differing in some ideologies but the basis of all democracies is recognition of human rights. It is the celebration of justice, peace, rights, equality, brotherhood and development.
The government works for the betterment of the people, to provide all the individuals with a basic standard of living and most importantly giving them the right to choose the way they want to live. The political body residing in the office is governed by a set of laws and monitored by courts and citizens.
It involves everyone in the decision-making process directly or indirectly by the people’s chosen representatives. On International Day of Democracy, celebrated on September 15, we strengthen and highlight the vital role played by parliaments and their ability to make laws and decisions that deliver justice to all. The right to express yourself, the right to protest for your point of view and the right to stand for a better and just tomorrow.
So, on this day let’s celebrate the togetherness, the capacity of man to remove injustice, to use this power to bring a change we want to see in this society because ultimately it isn’t the prime minister or president or officials who are the rulers but it is the voters.
