Mahabubnagar: Frustrated by official inaction and fearing severe crop damage, farmers in the Devarkadra constituency held a padayatra to demand water from the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS).
The protesters asked officials to release KLIS water into the Kanduru Peddavagu to save their standing crops. Former BRS MLA Alla Venkateshwar Reddy joined the march to support their cause.
Starting from Nijalapur, farmers and BRS activists marched while raising slogans against the Congress government. They expressed concern that the agricultural distress common before 2014 had returned to the area due to the Congress government’s inefficiency and lack of foresight.
BRS leaders noted that the Peddavagu rivulet, a tributary of River Krishna, met local irrigation needs for a decade without drying up. They pointed out that the stream has run completely dry this year, causing widespread alarm among growers.
Farmers from Moospet, Addakula and other mandals added that frequent power cuts are burning out their agricultural pump sets, causing further financial loss. They warned that their crops are at a critical growth stage and will fail completely without immediate water releases.
