Materials development refers to anything which is done by teachers or learners to facilitate the learning of language. Developing materials and activities for students helps to focus on the needs, abilities, interests, and expectations of the students.
Exposure to carefully planned and well-articulated learning activities would enhance learner self-confidence as a result of learning at their own pace and styles. Teachers do not consider themselves material designers as they believe that materials creation involves designing something original. However, they are constantly making decisions about their courses, to sequence the lesson, which forms the basis for materials development. This could be as simple as using a visual aid or as complex as creating a multifaceted activity.
The focus should be on different learning styles, analytic, experiential, and global, aspects; teaching-learning through novelty, attractive presentation, and appealing content; the importance of pre-and post-reflective questions to identify flaws.
Guidelines
- Using an experiential approach to engage learners holistically.
- Contextualizing activities to respond to a stimulus (a text, viewpoint, an event).
- Use mental imaging of situations.
- Collaborative activities for self-discoveries
- A silent period at the onset of instruction for sufficient exposure to the target language.
- Provide opportunities for feedback.
Though materials development is a challenging endeavor, the positive outcomes are many. The process helps to develop skills and knowledge contributing to professional development.
