Were you wondering what this blue dragon actually is in the image above? Well, it is the Odeleite Dam flowing. When seen from top, the water body has the shape of a blue dragon.
Located in the municipality of Castro Marim, in the Algarve, the Odeleite Dam was built on the Odeleite river, which rises in the Serra do Caldeirão and is a tributary of the River Guadiana.
The aerial photograph which showed the dam’s reservoir – shaped like a blue dragon – first went viral in the year 2015, as the dragon is an important symbol of power, strength and good luck in Chinese culture. Besides, the pattern was also traditionally used by emperors throughout history. Thus, the so-called ‘Blue Dragon River’ drew international attention in recent years, especially from Chinese tourists.
The picture was first taken by a traveller on a flight between Amsterdam and Marrakech, which flew over the Algarve. The picture immediately went viral, especially among Chinese media.
