Since the boom of internet and social media, Millennials and Gen Z must be using the term “LOL” – Laugh out loud / Laughing out Loud, without knowing who coined the term, where did it come from.
The man behind the term is Wayne Pearson of Calgary, he is reportedly the very first person to use the term LOL in the 80’s on an internet discussion forum, Bulletin Board System, which is one of the earliest forms of internet chat rooms.
He used the term LOL in response to a joke said by his friend, which made him burst into laughter. His friend enquired about LOL and soon it got adopted by others in the chat room, and in that system all around Calgary.
LOL is now a common parlance among people who communicate online, through SMS, WhatsApp, email or any other social media app.
According to Linguists, online language always gets mixed with multiple languages and terms. Online platforms are the birthplace for many terms like LOL.
A report in BBC says that people these days are using haha and emoticons more to express laughter than LOL.
Here are some other terms and abbreviations which are commonly being used.
ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing)
LQTM (laughing quietly to myself)
LSMH (laughing & shaking my head)
LMHO (laughing my head off)
