Hyderabad: Surgeons at Yashoda Hospitals have successfully performed a double lung transplant on a 52-year-old priest Venkatasha Rao from Kakinada.
Due to Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis, a medical condition characterised by formation of micro-stones, which are basically calcium depositions in the lungs, the patient had lost lung function and was in advanced lung failure, Surgical Director-Heart, Lung, Heart and lung Transplantation, Yashoda Hospitals, Dr. Jnanesh Thacker and Dr. Apar Jindal, Director, Advanced Lung Failure, Transplant Pulmonologist, who led the double-lung transplants, said.
As a result of the ailment, the patient was on constant oxygen support and every day he needed five to seven litre per minute of oxygen to maintain saturation of more than 90 percent. The patient was still not able to carry out his day-to-day activity without a drop in his oxygen level in blood.
“We have successfully done the surgery without ECMO, on beating heart, without a single blood transfusion. This is the safest for the patient. Therefore, he could walk on the fourth postoperative day, and could be discharged on the eleventh postoperative day from the hospital. We are proud of our team with their focus knowing that they are the best and that they have the faith in themselves,” said Dr. Jnanesh Thacker and Dr. Apar Jindal.
