Hyderabad: The Sultan Bazar police solved a major cash-in-transit theft case within 48 hours of it being reported and arrested a man who allegedly fled with nearly Rs 9.63 lakh in cash meant for bank deposit.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Shaik Rahman (46), was working as a driver for a cash transportation team attached to Cleared Security Services Private Ltd. On May 19, the team had collected cash from multiple business establishments, including D-Mart and Mangalya Shopping Mall, and reached the SBI Main Branch at Bank Street in Koti to deposit the collections.

Police said two cash custodians entered the bank with part of the collected amount while Rs 19 lakh in five cash bags remained inside the vehicle. “During the same time, the gunman briefly stepped away to use the washroom, leaving the vehicle unattended. Taking advantage of the situation, Rahman fled with the vehicle,” officials said.

The vehicle was later found abandoned near the District Hospital in King Koti. Upon opening the vehicle with a duplicate key, officials discovered that two cash bags containing Rs 9.6 lakh were missing.

Following the complaint, the Sultan Bazar police registered a case and, with the help of technical evidence, traced the suspect to Gulbarga in Karnataka.

He was nabbed by a special team along with the stolen cash of Rs 9.5 lakh and brought to the city on Thursday night.
