Suryapet: Farmers led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Suryapet district committee on Saturday urged the government to declare Mothe revenue mandal as a drought-affected area.

A delegation of the party visited the Bikkya Tanda village and took stock of the condition of the standing crops. They raised concern over the crops drying up.

Speaking on the occasion, M Saidulu, district committee leader, demanded compensation for the farmers whose crops withered due to lack of water. He highlighted that the failure of water supply through the SRSP canal led to the drying up of thousands of acres of crops across all villages in the mandal.

He expressed concern that even a single wetting could have saved the crops. Farmers, who borrowed heavily to cultivate their lands, were now burdened with debts due to the crop failure, he added.

Saidulu called on the government to provide financial relief of Rs.30,000 per acre to the affected farmers and to declare Mothe mandal as a drought-hit area. He emphasized the dire situation of farmers who, despite their hard work and investments, are now facing severe distress and uncertainty.

Criticizing the government’s negligence during the Yasangi season, Saidulu stated that the lack of planning resulted in huge losses for the farmers. He urged officials to conduct a comprehensive survey of crop damage across all villages in the mandal and take immediate steps to compensate the farmers.

He warned that if the government fails to act, large-scale protests involving farmers from all villages in the mandal would be organized.
