Drunk driving: Cyberabad cops book over 20,000 in six months

After a lull, Cyberabad police resume drunk driving checks across the city

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police booked 20,326 cases against persons who were caught during drunk driving in the last six months. The highest numbers of cases (3,113) were booked in Gachibowli traffic police station area followed by 3,077 cases in Madhapur.

The police caught a whopping 15,456 two-wheeler riders during the check followed by 4,089 persons steering the cars and 618 persons being auto-rickshaw drivers.


The police said that during the checking, they found highly educated professionals driving under the influence of alcohol. “The worrying part is that they are resorting to drunk driving despite they know very well about the rules and its consequences and risking the safety of other innocent road users,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic) Cyberabad.

The traffic police who have noticed an increase in accidents have resumed checking in all the police stations areas in recent weeks after a break during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Cases are booked against those caught during drunk driving checks and all of them will be produced before the court and prosecuted,” the official said.

The police are also seizing the driving licenses of those driving under the influence of alcohol and referring to the Road Transport Authority for disqualification. “Person whose driving license is seized cannot drive the vehicle till they get it back and until they complete the mandatory ‘driver refresher training course’ conducted by the RTA,” said Vijay Kumar.

He said any person caught for causing fatal accidents under influence of alcohol would be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder which could lead to imprisonment of up to ten years. Also, the persons who knowingly allow or accompany the drunk drivers are also being prosecuted for abetting the crimes as per section 109 IPC and section 188 MV act, he added.
