Hyderabad: Electric buses will soon shuttle with students between colleges and hostels on the Osmania University campus, with the varsity taking more steps towards its goal of implementing a closed campus.
To begin with, two electric buses will be introduced on the campus to offer free shuttle services to students and staff of the university. Each bus can accommodate 20 persons.
The move is expected to speed up the university administration’s plans for a closed campus by closing the present multiple exit and entry points. The administration has already proposed the Adikmet and Manikeshwar Nagar roads to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation as alternative routes for the general public and RTC buses when the campus is closed. Entry into the campus has already been restricted from 6 pm to 6 am with RTC buses too not plying anymore on the campus roads.
The idea behind the closed campus is to curb entry of outsiders into the campus. Starting this academic year, students of campus colleges will be provided with a unique identity card which will help officials and university security personnel identify bonafide students of the campus.
The varsity will soon issue coloured vehicle entry stickers for students and staff of the university. This means vehicles of students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and also of visitors, will have different colour stickers, making it easy for the security to identify any vehicle on the campus.
“There are plans for a single entry and exit system on the campus and the university is working on it. There are plans to operate electric buses on the campus to shuttle students and staff. The university has restricted entry into the campus during night hours,” a senior official said.
