Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Porika Balram Naik from contesting elections to any legislative body for a period of three years. Telangana State Chief Electoral Officer Shashank Goel issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday, after Balram Naik failed to submit the election expenditure details pertaining to his candidature in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to the EC within the stipulated time.
After giving him sufficient notice, the EC took the decision to disqualify him from contesting elections for three years along with four other candidates. Balram Naik contested on Congress ticket from Mahabubabad Parliamentary constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Others who were disqualified include Madhavareddy Gari Hanmanth Reddy (Shiva Sena party) from Medak Parliamentary constituency, Katravath Venkatesh (Bahujan Mukthi party) and Royyala Srinivasulu (independent) from Nalgonda Parliamentary constituency, and also Kalluri Venkateswara Rao (CPI) from Mahabubabad Parliamentary constituency.
Naik served as the Union Minister of State in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet in 2012. He lost both the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019, and contested unsuccessfully from Mahabubabad Assembly seat in December 2018.
