Hyderabad: BRSLP deputy leader and Sanath Nagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Sunday accused the Election Commission of adopting procedures that undermine voters’ rights and causing confusion in the electoral process.
He questioned why voter registration was required afresh before every graduate MLC election. He urged the EC to introduce a system that registers only newly eligible graduates.
Addressing a graduate voter registration programme at Belvardi Garden Apartments in Padmarao Nagar, Srinivas Yadav alleged that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were being appointed without adequate technological knowledge or a proper understanding of the process.
He stated that this created confusion during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, resulting in the deletion of lakhs of voters’ names.
Sanath Nagar MLA questioned the rationale behind issuing notices to voters whose names were removed and asked whether the EC had no responsibility to protect the constitutional right to vote. He also criticised the Commission for not adequately utilising the support of the Central and State governments for voter registration activities.
With graduate MLC elections approaching, the former Minister appealed to eligible graduates to enrol themselves and encourage others to register, stressing that voting preferences were their personal choice.
Srinivas Yadav criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy over power and drinking water shortages in the State. He said the Chief Minister retained the municipal administration, home and education portfolios but had failed to adequately monitor them. He recalled that former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao regularly reviewed drinking water and power supply issues and took corrective measures.
