Hyderabad: The majestic elephant ‘Sudha Rani’, who had participated in the religious events of Muharram and Bonalu in Hyderabad in the last few years, passed away in the early hours of Monday in Karnataka. The elephant was aged around 60 years.
The mahout, Nazeer, speaking to Telangana Today from Belagavi district in Karnataka, said that the elephant was brought to Hyderabad 2019 and participated in at least five to six programs. “It carried Bibi-ka-Alam in 2019 and also participated in the Bonalu celebrations apart from other programs,” he said.

The elephant was not keeping well for the last few months after sustaining a leg injury. “Doctors treated it for the wound as it was unable to stand due to the pain in the leg. Last week, the doctors had to administer saline to Sudha Rani for the entire day,” Nazeer said.
The owner and the mahout kept the elephant in front of their house to allow the public to pay homage to Sudha Rani. “In the evening, the elephant was laid to rest after performing necessary rituals,” he informed. Emotional moments were witnessed as the family members were weeping inconsolably.
In Hyderabad, the members of the Shia community recalled the services rendered by the elephant during the Muharram procession. Mujtaba Abedi, a Shia religious leader said that the elephant was well trained and carried to Bibi-ka-Alam very peacefully all along the route.
“People appreciated the behaviour of the elephant. It was very friendly and did not panic during the procession,” he recalled.
