It is not very often that one finds an author’s child turning into an author too… creativity and creative writing are not like other professions which can be handed down across generations. But, here come three generations from the same family — a grandfather, a mother, and a daughter — who seek the readers to enter their world, and promise to entertain them with an interesting ‘drabble’ collection.

For the uninitiated, a ‘drabble’ is a short story written in exactly 100 words – not a word more, not a wordless. Titled Our World: A Symphony of Drabbles by Three Generations, written by Bishan Sahai, Ruchi Ranjan, and Ishika Ranjan, the collection has 86 simple short stories which are quite engaging. Due to their very nature, form, and structure, the stories would be appealing even to a beginner who is looking for the right book to begin their journey of reading.

Bishan’s stories are mostly anecdotes from his time in the corporate world with an appropriate – often hilarious – punchline at the end of the tale. The crux of each story lies in the hilarious way it ends – be it Chee Chee, Meri Ganga Maili, Machines May Lie, Enhancing the Taste or Paris Pre-empted, and the reader can’t help but laugh out loud.

Ruchi’s drabbles are reflective of her observation of people and situations around her. The stories also show her passion towards the profession – of teaching psychology and also counselling people, besides her love for nature and living beings, and her longing for childhood days, while also giving a glimpse of her travels in the country and abroad. Whether it is Call of the Wild, Dancing Queen, Standing Firm, The Guest, The Solitary Window, or Holding On, each has its own place in the book and shows a different side of the author.

On the other hand, 15-year-old Ishika, who started writing at the age of 7, lets her imagination take over in most stories. In some stories, one can see bubbly and mischievous self (Musical Family, Pawsome, Deep Sea Terror, Yeti), while in some her inquisitiveness and wild imagination can be felt (Eggcelent, Trapped, Mister Sinister, Whose Script is It and Necklace or Noose), and in yet other stories, her childlike enthusiasm peeks through (Trick or Treat, Shopping Right and Dark). A discerned reader will also understand how the young writer is influenced by what she sees, reads, and observes, and how the absorbed information is assimilated through the stories.
A good pick for a quick read.
