Hyderabad: Apple’s Lightning charger has been facing contention from the European Union even as the commission presses for a common charging standard. As per reports, the European Commission is set to propose legal measures to use a common charging standard like USB-C which could force Apple to ditch its Lightning charger.
As per a Reuters story, the EU will be presenting a legislative proposal that would force manufacturers to use a common charging standard by the middle of 2024 and while all smartphone makers use the USB-C charging standard, Apple has its own charging standard. This proposal would put the iPhone maker in a fix.
While Apple has USB-C ports on some hardware, Lightning is the standard on its iPhones and reports suggest Apple is going to opt for an port-less iPhone in the future. Apple had argued against the common charging standard saying it stifles innovation.
