Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Monday announced that families of its staffers, who lost their lives due to Covid-19 while they were on the GHMC rolls, would be eligible for cash compensation.

In a circular issued to its employees, the GHMC said this was as per the recent amendments by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (Government of India) which would apply to all GHMC staffers as well. If a GHMC staffer dies due to Covid-19 during the course of employment, his or her family will be eligible for cash compensation under the Employees Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme, the circular said.

Earlier Covid-19 was not included in the list of diseases under which such compensation was given. The maximum compensation was Rs.7 lakh, the circular said. Before the amendment, the maximum amount released to the dependent family members of the deceased was Rs.6 lakh. As on date, all GHMC workers are covered under the EDLI scheme.
