Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon after a group of farmers from Narayanpur village in Mahabubabad district staged a protest, demanding the removal of forest category tags from their agricultural lands in official records.
The farmers attempted to meet senior officials to seek resolution of the long-pending issue, but police intercepted them before they could reach the Secretariat gates. Anticipating trouble during the Cabinet meeting underway at the time, the police stopped the protesters midway and detained them.
Heated arguments broke out between the farmers and police personnel before the protestors were taken into custody.
According to the farmers, the previous government had issued pattas for approximately 700 acres, while an additional 1,100 acres were pending allotment. They alleged that despite repeated representations at the district level, their grievances remained unaddressed.
With the Cabinet meeting scheduled at the Secretariat, the farmers said they had hoped to present their concerns directly to Ministers and senior officials.
