Farmers stage protest over power cuts in Nagarkurnool
Farmers staged a protest at Utkoor checkpost in Nagarkurnool on Tuesday, demanding uninterrupted power supply for irrigation. They said power cuts had left borewells and motors inoperative, threatening crops nearing harvest, and sought immediate government intervention
Nagarkurnool: Demanding quality and uninterrupted power supply, farmers staged a protest at the Utkoor checkpost here on Tuesday. The protest disrupted vehicular movement towards Makthal and Narayanpet, causing inconvenience to passengers.
The farmers expressed concern that their crops could wither due to inadequate water supply caused by power disruptions. They lashed out at the authorities for resorting to power cuts at a time when crops required irrigation.
They said power outages were rendering agricultural borewells and motors inoperative, depriving crops of water. After investing heavily in cultivation, the farmers were staring at potential losses as their crops neared harvest.
The farmers also questioned the disconnect between electoral promises and the situation on the ground. They asked why they were being forced to take to the streets seeking electricity when their crops urgently needed water. They demanded that the government intervene immediately, stop power cuts and ensure quality and uninterrupted electricity supply to the agricultural sector round the clock.
Senior BRS leaders Koram Shivaraj Reddy and others extended their support to the protest. They criticised the Congress government, alleging that instead of resolving farmers’ problems, it had created new difficulties since coming to power.
