Karimnagar: Farmers staged a rasta roko by placing paddy bags on the Karimnagar–Jammikunta road at Narsingapur in Veenavanka mandal on Saturday, protesting the stalling of paddy procurement by the police.
Farmers had been drying paddy on the roads for the past ten days, but weighing at the procurement centre had not yet begun. Hamalis had refused to weigh the paddy, demanding a hike in weighing charges. As the local hamalis refused, farmers engaged labourers from Bihar on Friday and began the process. Acting on a complaint from local hamalis, police visited the centre on Saturday and stopped the weighing process.
Angered by this, farmers staged a dharna and rasta roko by placing paddy bags on the road and raised slogans against the police. Vehicular traffic on the Karimnagar–Jammikunta stretch came to a standstill for about an hour. The ryots withdrew their protest after SI Avula Thirupathi informed them that they could weigh the crop using labourers of their choice.
