Medak: In a classic example of gross negligence on part of the police, it has come to light that the Narsapur police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a man who died seven years ago.
It was when the police visited the house as part of an enquiry recently after registering the case that they came to know that the man was dead. The bizarre incident occurred at Lachiram Thanda, a hamlet of Narayanpur village. Two tribal families in the village had a long pending land dispute between them. When they quarreled over the same two months ago, one of the two families filed a case against Dev Singh, Surya, Anjaneyulu and Pathloth Vittal. Vittal, however, had passed away seven years ago. However, the SI registered a case against the four, arraigning Vittal as the fourth accused. Vittal’s family members alleged that the SI, Lingam, who had registered the FIR, was favouring their rivals.
They also alleged that he had taken a minor from their family into custody for taking pictures while their rivals were encroaching upon the disputed lands. They said the registration of the case against a dead person proved how blindly SI Lingam believed the words of their rivals. When contacted, the SI said the police would usually file an FIR after receiving a complaint. They would later enquire into the complaint.
However, the registration of an FIR against a dead person drew criticism from all sections. Vittal’s relatives staged a protest at the disputed land holding his death certificate and his photograph. They urged SP D Uday Kumar Reddy to initiate action against the SI.
