Warangal: The first case of Omicron variant of the Coronavirus was reported in Hanamkonda, Warangal on Friday. A 40-year-old woman, who returned from the UK on December 2, has tested positive for the new variant, said District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr K Lalitha Devi.

“She has been shifted to Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) for treatment from here on Friday around 8 am. We are also collecting swab samples of all her contacts, including family members and relatives, and kept them all the residents of the apartment in isolation,” she said. There are about 26 people residing in the same apartment where she has been living with her husband.

The medical and health department officials have asked the residents to venture out of the apartment until all of them get the negative reports of the novel coronavirus. “We are sending the samples for genome sequencing,” the officials said and added that it had become a tough task to identify all the contacts of the woman who tested positive for the new variant.

Following the detection of the Omicron, fear has gripped the people of Warangal. Several parents are saying that they had decided not to send their children to schools.

“I have decided not to send my son who is in 5th standard in a private school in Ramnagar in Hanamkonda to school from tomorrow as the new variant spreads quickly. I have also talked to the school management about the issue, they said that they would take a call on off-line classes today evening,” said Ravinder, a resident of Ramnagar, Hanamkonda.
