Nalgonda: Police arrested five persons and seized 120 kgs of ganja from their possession during vehicle check at Kattangur on National Highway 65 on Monday.
Sumithra Sarkar, Sujith Biswal and Amal Poddar, natives of Odisha, who were travelling by bus, were arrested in the first case while they were trying to smuggle 20 kgs of ganja. They had bought the ganja from a person at Bardhrachalam in Khammam district and were transporting it to Hyderabad.
In the second incident, Surelam Iliyas Syed and Mahaboob Dangde, natives of Maharashtra, were arrested while they were transporting 100 kgs of ganja in a car. They were smuggling the ganja to Lathur from Odisha.
Addressing the media, Superintendent of Police A V Ranganath said police received tip-off that peddlers were illegally transporting banned ganja by bus and also taking the help of women not to raise suspicion.
During interrogations, the accused revealed that two more women – Vinayaka Dubey and Parvathi Nivarthi Jadav and three persons Devaraj Kamte, Syed Husein Nazer and Somnath Duth Jadav, all from Odisha, also had links with ganja smugglers.
No truth in viral news in social media
Stating that the vehicle check was taken up by the police with record of cameras and CCTV Cameras, he said there was no truth in posts that had gone viral in social media platfroms that the son of Jaggayyapet MLA was arrested with ganja at Kattangur and that he was let off by the police. The police were ready to show CCTV footage pertaining to vehicle checks if any one wanted to cross-check, he added.
