New Delhi: Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra on Wednesday travelled by the metro, saying the move was part of the government’s effort to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce fuel consumption and promote energy conservation amid global economic uncertainty.

Sharing a video of his metro journey on social media platform X, Mishra wrote, “Following the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, Delhi’s CM Rekha Gupta ji and all ministers have begun implementation with resolve. I will use public transport or, only when necessary, a single government vehicle. Today’s morning journey on the Delhi Metro.”

The minister’s post came a day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a broader initiative aimed at reducing fuel use and encouraging public transport and carpooling among ministers, legislators and government officials.

In a detailed post on X on Tuesday night, Gupta said, “Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has called upon the citizens of the country to save petrol-diesel and make energy conservation a people’s movement, in view of the current global situation.” “In internalising this important appeal of Hon’ble Prime Minister ji, a decision has been taken to limit the number of vehicles for departmental work. I, and all my Cabinet colleagues, all MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party, public representatives, officers of the Delhi government, and all departments will also use the minimum number of vehicles as per requirement and prioritise carpooling and public transport,” she added.

Calling energy conservation a matter linked to national interest, the Chief Minister said the Delhi government was working “with full commitment” to promote fuel conservation and the use of public transport. “I urge all Delhi residents to also join this national effort for energy conservation by following this call of Hon’ble Prime Minister ji,” Gupta said.

The appeals followed Prime Minister Modi’s remarks at a public meeting organised by the BJP at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, Telangana, on Sunday, where he urged citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures in view of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its impact on the global economy.

The Prime Minister encouraged people to use public transport, opt for work-from-home where possible, avoid unnecessary purchases, including gold, and reduce overseas travel to help conserve foreign exchange. “Since petrol and diesel have become extremely expensive across the world, it is our responsibility to save fuel and thereby save the foreign exchange spent on purchasing petrol and diesel,” PM Modi had said.
