Food poisoning again: 18 students fall sick after mid-day meals in Karimnagar

Out of 205 students, 180 had the mid-day meals provided in the school. Of thes, 18 students had vomiting and stomach pain. DEO Janardhan Rao claimed that this was because none of the 18 students had breakfast that day.

Karimnagar: In a disturbing trend of food poisoning incidents in State-run educational institutions, students of the Zilla Parishad High School at Burugupalli of Gangadhara mandal here complained of vomiting and stomach pain after having mid-day meals on Friday.

School headmaster Mallikarjun alerted the Primary Health Centre staff, who visited the school and provided treatment to students. The health condition of students was stated to be stable. Out of 205 students, 180 had the mid-day meals provided in the school. Of thes, 18 students had vomiting and stomach pain. DEO Janardhan Rao claimed that this was because none of the 18 students had breakfast that day.


Rao, who visited the school on Saturday, enquired about the incident by interacting with staff and officials of other departments. He also enquired about the health condition of students by interacting with PHC medical officer Dr Swetha Rani. He also instructed the MEO to visit the school. The MEO visited the school at 2.30 pm and enquired about the incident by interacting with students, staff and mid-day meal agency staff.

Based on the District Collector’s instructions, the Civil Supplies district manager sent technical staff to the school to examine whether the problem was with the rice supplied. They have said that there was no problem with the rice, the DEO claimed.
