Former hockey Olympian Dr. Vece Paes passes away at 80

Former hockey international and 1972 Munich Olympics bronze medallist Dr. Vece Paes passed away in Kolkata at 80. A versatile sportsman and sports medicine doctor, he also held key roles in rugby, cricket, and Davis Cup administration.

HYDERABAD: Former hockey international and 1972 Munich Olympics bronze medallist Dr. Vece Paes passed away in Kolkata. He was 80.

Dr. Paes, an acknowledged midfielder during his heydays and father of the legendary Indian tennis player Leander Paes, has been suffering from final stages of Parkinson’s disease.


Dr Paes also played football, rugby and cricket and was also the President of Indian Rugby Football Union besides being a sports medicine doctor.

He served on the Asian Cricket Council, the BCCI and the Davis Cup teams.
