Hyderabad: Former MLC T Jeevan Reddy wanted the Congress government to increase the MGNREGA scheme daily wage to Rs.400, besides extending summer allowance to workers considering the rising day temperature.
During the Assembly elections, the Congress in its manifesto had assured to enhance MGNREGA scheme by providing 150 days of assured employment and a minimum wage of Rs.350 per day.
In a letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday, the former MLC reminded that last year the Telangana government had paid Rs.300 as daily wage under the scheme. This year, only Rs.7 was increased and accordingly the workers were being paid a daily wage of only Rs.307.
Further, the workers were not deprived of the summer allowance and with insufficient wages, the workers were struggling to make ends meet, he said.
Already, Punjab and Haryana governments had increased the daily wage to workers to Rs.400. Taking a cue, the Telangana government should also pay Rs.400 as daily wage to workers, besides extending summer allowance, he demanded.
The summer allowance for March should be extended with an additional 25 percent and for April and May months it should be extended with additional 30 percent, he said.
Referring to the wild growth of vegetation in canals, silt accumulation and trash in SRSP canals, the former MLC wanted the government to execute works to clear the trash in the canals under MGNREGA scheme.
