Four remanded for brandishing sword during Ganesh immersion procession in Kothagudem

Four persons were arrested and remanded in Kothagudem for allegedly creating panic by brandishing a sword during a Ganesh immersion procession. Police acted after a video of the incident went viral, while residents in a separate Khammam incident sought action against youths performing sword-wielding stunts during immersion festivities.

Kothagudem: The Two-Town police have arrested and remanded four persons for causing public disturbance and panic by brandishing a talwar (sword) during the Ganesh immersion procession.

In a statement here on Friday, Kothagudem DSP Adinarayana informed that police received information that a resident, Chitthari Lingaprasad was moving through the crowd holding a talwar during Ganesh immersion procession at Gareebpet village in Kotahgudem mandal late on Thursday night.

It was found that three others Palle Satish, Gogula Naveen and Bhukya Ganesh of Nanda thanda also accompanied him and contributed to the panic among the public. The police rushed to the scene, but the four individuals fled upon spotting the officers.

After a video of the incident went viral on social media, the police investigated the matter, verified the facts, took the four individuals into custody and initiated legal proceedings against them.

DSP Adinarayana warned that the display of lethal weapons, behaviour that causes public inconvenience, acts that incite fear or panic and activities that disrupt law and order would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a few youths performed dances wielding talwars during Ganesh immersion festivities organised by the sarpanch of Puvvada Uday Nagar in Khammam district on Thursday night.

The youths’ reckless display of sword-wielding stunts frightened women and children who had gathered to witness the event, locals complained. The residents demanded the authorities immediately detain the youths seen carrying swords and take legal action against them.
