Paris: Rafael Jodar made a strong impression on the biggest clay-court stage with a commanding win in his French Open debut. He defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 in just one hour and 34 minutes on Monday at Roland Garros.

The 19-year-old Spaniard came to Paris with great momentum from a successful European clay season.

He quickly matched the hype surrounding him with a bold first-round performance.

This marked the first time he was seeded at a Grand Slam tournament in his young career.

Jodar dominated Kovacevic with relentless aggression from the baseline and controlled the match from the very first game.

This victory boosted Jodar’s impressive clay-court record for the 2026 season to 16 wins and three losses.

His remarkable rise has made him one of the standout young players on the ATP Tour this year.

At the start of the season, Jodar ranked No. 168 in the world, but he has climbed to a career-high No. 29 in the ATP Rankings due to his breakout year.

His rapid rise includes winning his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and reaching the quarterfinals in the Masters events in Madrid and Rome.

Against Kovacevic, Jodar displayed the confidence and maturity that have characterized his rise.

Kovacevic entered the match after reaching the semifinals in Hamburg as a lucky loser last week, but he struggled to handle Jodar’s intensity and shot-making in their first ATP Tour encounter.

Jodar quickly took the first two sets, giving up only one game, before finishing the third set with little trouble.

This established one of the most convincing performances in the opening round.

Next, Jodar will face James Duckworth, who advanced after Gabriel Diallo retired while trailing 6-1, 4-1.

In the bottom half of the draw, fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta caused an upset by defeating 12th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3

Potential future opponent Alex Michelsen also won easily with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Aleksandr Shevchenko.

He will now meet wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy, who shocked seventh seed Taylor Fritz on Sunday.
