Hyderabad: Playing a cop on-screen is in itself a challenge, but Neha Dhupia had to step into the shoes of ACP Catherine “Cathy” Alvarez in ‘A Thursday’ while being heavily pregnant. By doing it so effortlessly, the former Miss India has, once again, proved her acting calibre and has been receiving appreciation for taking up the role head-on in the thriller film.
Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, the #NoFilterNeha star said, “It was challenging physically as there was a whole lot of discomfort, but the joy of being on a film set is second to none. I respect everyone who stays at home for clinical and emotional reasons when they are pregnant (maternity and paternity leaves are great), but I love what I do, and being on a film set was fantastic for me. I knew after giving birth, at least for two-three months I would be sitting at home and not working, so ‘A Thursday’ was a nice outlet for me.”
The 41-year-old actor reveals that things have changed in her work life since her marriage to actor Angad Bedi and having two kids. Now, the actor cannot wait to go home after pack-up. “Earlier, I would stay back and enjoy some tea and Maggi or even wait to watch the sunrise with the cast or crew post my night shoots… but now, I cannot wait to run back home to my family. I am blessed to be a working actor and I don’t take it for granted, especially since I have been through many ups and downs in my career. But right now, I prefer coming on time and leaving on time,” shared Neha.
On playing the role of a cop once again in ‘A Thursday’ after portraying ACP Jayati Bhargav in ‘Sanak’, Neha shared, “Catherine is far more risk-taking than the characters I have played in the past. She’s angry – anger is an easy emotion to portray on-screen but it is difficult to not go over the top. My director, Behzad (Khambata), made sure Atul (Kulkarni) and I toned it down in certain scenes.”
Although she didn’t have many scenes with co-star Yami Gautam, Neha is all praise for the actor. “She’s such a great actor and I look forward to working with her again. Yami is not just talented, but a good person to be friends with,” Neha said.
Neha was trolled heavily in the past after a clip from the reality show ‘MTV Roadies’ went viral. The actor had berated a male contestant, who claimed to have slapped his girlfriend for cheating on him. Netizens accused her of misrepresenting what feminism and gender equality stand for because her reaction to a female contestant who said she had slapped four men was not as strong.
On what she thinks of trolls, Neha said, “I have nothing to tell the trolls because it is like banging your head against a brick wall. It’s all about a difference in the perspective between people. Things are often easily misunderstood, and a lot of things are published as click-bait, I’d rather refrain from saying anything and preserve my sanity.”
