Gachibowli residents struggle as drainage water floods cellar

Flat owners of Jayadarshini Residency in Gachibowli have complained of drainage water inundating their cellar for two weeks. Residents blamed debris from a demolished building for blocking a drainage nala and urged civic authorities to clear it and undertake repairs

Hyderabad: Flat owners of Jayadarshini Residency in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, have complained that the cellar premises have been inundated with drainage water, causing an unbearable stench for the past two weeks.

The complex is located next to an illegal seven-storey building that collapsed on August 22, killing two workers and damaging several flats in Jayadarshini Residency. The property owner had constructed the building over a drainage nala, resulting in the collapse.

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (Hydraa) subsequently demolished the collapsed structure in a joint operation.

However, tonnes of debris left at the site have completely blocked a drainage nala, causing water to enter Jayadarshini Residency and stagnate, residents said.

D Ramakrishna, joint secretary of the Jayadarshini Residency Flat Owners Welfare Association, said residents had been unable to stay in the complex for two weeks as drainage water had inundated the cellar, causing a severe stench. Draining the water was the only option, he added.

He said the association had complained to CMC Commissioner G Srijana and other officials, but the leakage remained unattended.

Residents urged the CMC to undertake immediate repairs and regular maintenance to prevent a recurrence. CMC sources said the drainage leak could not be stopped unless the debris was cleared.
