Hyderabad: If announcement times from the start of the year are to be believed, 2022 is going to be one of the most exciting years for gamers as we not only get the games delayed from 2021 but also the ones promised for 2022. At first glance expect to be spoilt for choice as the number of games can leave you both confused and simply amazed. However, also temper your expectations as a lot of these games, especially the ones scheduled for late 2022 may be pushed back with Covid and its various mutations unwilling to take a break.
This list begins with five of the biggest games from 2022 that I am looking forward to, a lot of the games you enjoy might not make it here but then this a year that promises new games from Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. When was the last time that happened?
Horizon Forbidden West: February 18, 2022 PS5 and PS4
The first game on this list is one that was delayed from 2021, Aloy’s journey looks to continue as she moves to a new territory. The terrain, the machines, the wildlife, and the game’s playable options all seem more evolved and refined in the trailers that Guerrilla has showcased so far. This could be one of the biggest RPGs of the year and with Aloy only looking meaner and stronger, I expect Horizon’s sequel to be as big as the Last of Us II if not better. If all of that is not enough, have you seen those gorgeous beaches in the trailer?
Elden Ring: February 25, 2022 PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, S, One and PC
The second game on this list is another third person action adventure that promises to be a new direction for its developer From Software. The makers of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro give us a game set in a world full of magic and quick combat. I expect this one to be very different from the usual punishing games that they make. Some stunning visuals and a wide range of enemies suggest Elden Ring will be a tough cookie to crack.
Starfield: November 11, 2022 Xbox Series X, S and PC
Bethesda’s new game world is being dubbed by several people as Skyrim in space, to me that claim makes no sense as any RPG set in space must handle the success of the Mass Effect franchise. If Bethesda, does it right Starfield will have no similarities with Skyrim and will be an entirely new experience built from the ground up. Here’s hoping to Bethesda remembering how to make new games and not just newer variants of Skyrim. If Starfield succeeds, Microsoft’s resurgence for exclusive games continues.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 2022 expected, Nintendo Switch exclusive
The next game on this list doesn’t have an exact release date but for a 2022 promise from Nintendo. Breath of the Wild 2 is succeeding one of the best games made for the Switch and a game that changed the way RPGs have been designed since 2017. Its predecessor introduced us to live, sprawling worlds and a map that wasn’t limited by set paths and routes. Expecting the sequel to be revolutionary on the same scale may be too much of an ask, but either way, Link and Zelda’s iconic tale will remain as timeless as ever.
God of War: Ragnarök 2022 expected, PS5 and PS4
The last game on the list is also the biggest one, as fans eagerly await the showdown between Kratos and Thor to kick of the Ragnarök; the mythical battle in Viking lore that signals the end of the world. The last God of War showed us a new combat system and a very exploration focused playstyle as one of the best hack ‘n’ slash games matured significantly. With Atreus’ true name revealed along with his lineage and Kratos having his own version of a weapon that always comes back to him (his own take on Mjolnir) the battle with Thor is a mouthwatering date set in the stars. It will be very interesting to see how the series develops its own interpretation of Ragnarök as Kratos is bound to take center-stage in this one.
So here we are with the most promising games from 2022, there are always going to be a few surprises that will change this list as the year progresses. Here’s hoping 2022 is the year when we pick and choose the best of games and also have the opportunity to indulge in outdoor activities, hopefully without a mask. A guy can hoe right?
