Hyderabad: In the last one-year, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the healthcare workers at Gandhi Hospital have treated 35,000 Covid positive patients, successfully oversaw over 900 deliveries of pregnant Covid positive women and saved the lives of nearly 7000 Covid positive individuals who needed ICU care.
On Tuesday, Health Minister, E. Rajender felicitated the doctors, nurses, paramedical and sanitation staff of the hospital along with the first Covid patient who was admitted to the hospital on March 2 last year.
“We have come a long way and learnt a lot in the last one-year. I must congratulate the recovered Covid patients and health care workers of Gandhi Hospital, who have worked non-stop over the entire year and saved lives,” said Rajender.
When the first few cases of Covid-19 were reported in the country in March, 2020, due to the novel nature of SARS-CoV-2 virus, there was little information available on treatment protocols and life-saving drugs to treat Covid infection. As a result, the State government immediately took a decision to centralise Covid treatment and converted Gandhi Hospital into an exclusive standalone Covid healthcare facility.
“I must commend our team of doctors, nurses, paramedics and sanitation staff and the large number of junior doctors and house surgeons who kept turning-up for work, despite the pressure. We managed to learn and evolve while treating Covid patients,” said Superintendent, Gandhi Hospital, Dr M Raja Rao.
The Gandhi Hospital also faced the challenge of safely handling patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), who are enrolled in the hospital’s free dialysis centre. In the process, over 7000 kidney patients received dialysis in the last one year.
“We even had a number of kidney patients who had tested positive for Covid and have managed to help them recover. There is no denying the fact that we learned a lot about Covid and its treatment protocols at Gandhi Hospital and were able to implement them across other healthcare centres in the State,” said Director of Medical Education (DME), Dr. K Ramesh Reddy.
The Health Minister congratulated and felicitated the first Covid patient Ravi Teja, who had tested positive for Covid on March 2 last year. “Telangana was the first to alert the Union Ministry about the presence of a cluster related to Tablighi Jamaat in Karimnagar. During the lockdown, we were also the first to demand for stoppage of flights and railways. Telangana was the first in strictly implementing the lockdown, which gave us time to understand and prepare our response to Covid,” he said.
