Adilabad: The nine-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival began with religious fervour and gaiety across the erstwhile Adilabad district on Thursday.

Devotees installed idols of Lord Ganesha in homes, streets, and junctions, performing special prayers and offering traditional sweets in thanksgiving for wellbeing and prosperity. The deity, revered as the remover of obstacles, was welcomed with elaborate rituals.

Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan visited a pandal at the Armed Reserve headquarters in Adilabad, while Collector Rajarshi Shah offered prayers at a pandal in the district headquarters. Both officials said arrangements were in place for the smooth immersion of idols at the festival’s conclusion.

Mahajan said 1,200 idols were installed across Adilabad district, with 600 police personnel and 400 CCTV cameras deployed to ensure security and prevent untoward incidents. In Mancherial district, 883 idols were installed.

Meanwhile, voluntary organisations distributed clay idols in Mancherial and Nirmal towns to promote eco-friendly celebrations. Municipal officials appealed to devotees to opt for clay idols instead of plaster-of-Paris, warning that non-biodegradable idols could harm water bodies and aquatic life.
