Hyderabad: Doctors, police officers and sanitation workers have been at the forefront in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic over the last one year. And what could be a better way to appreciate and remember their efforts than setting up their statues at an important junction.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to take a leap ahead in the junction improvement programme and honour the exemplary work carried out by frontline workers in these three sectors. The junction at Vivekananda Nagar in Kukatpally will not only help in reducing traffic snarls but will also not let citizens forget the work done by frontline warriors during the pandemic.

GHMC, as part of its beautification programme, has set up statues of a doctor, police officer and a sanitation worker at the junction. Besides each statue, signage with a caption has also been put up.

The signage describe these personnel from three different professions with heartfelt observations. The doctor is presented as ‘preminche manasu’ (loving heart), police officer as ‘spandinche hrudayam’ (heart that beats for others) and that of sanitation worker who is depicted with a broom in her hand as ‘pani chesey chethulu’ (hands that work hard).

The junction at the entrance of the Vivekananda Nagar Colony has been catching the attention of locals and passers-by. “I am happy that the statue of a sanitation worker was also included in the list of frontline workers. They risked their lives during the pandemic and made sure that the city remained clean,” said Jaya Shree, a resident of Kukatpally.

Apart from the statues, the board in front of the junction has ‘a salute to the frontline corona warriors’ written on it. Well illuminated in front of a statue of Swami Vivekananda, the junction has truly come alive and several people could be seen taking pictures of the junction and recording their selfies.

The junction here is also reducing traffic snarls and making the crossing of the ever-busy road easy for pedestrians. Clearly demarcated and earmarked u-turns have resulted in the motorists turning their vehicles at the designated points and not crossing the highway points erratically like earlier.
