Hyderabad: The expansion of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction has become a boon for government school teachers and other government employees, as their monthly salaries are set to increase.

With new boundaries recently coming into effect, government employees are now eligible for a revised House Rent Allowance (HRA) and City Compensatory Allowance (CCA).

Previously, employees working within eight kilometres of the GHMC boundary were given 13 percent HRA. In some peripheral areas, they also received 11 percent HRA.

Under the expanded GHMC limits, they are now eligible for an HRA rate of 24 percent, applicable to the corporation limits.

For example, a secondary grade teacher with a basic pay of Rs 30,000 will receive an additional Rs 3,900 as HRA. Similarly, a school assistant with a basic salary of Rs 40,000 can expect a hike of Rs 5,200.

The State government has recently completed re-organisation of the GHMC, establishing 12 administrative zones and 60 circles.
Following the merger of 27 urban local bodies (ULBs), the GHMC area has expanded from roughly 650 square kilometres to 2,053 square kilometres.

Furthermore, the expansion also benefits employees working within eight kilometres of the newly defined boundary. These employees will now qualify for enhanced HRA.
