Hyderabad: Several GHMC garbage collection workers were taken into custody by police when they attempted to stage a protest near the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Saturday, opposing the proposed changes to the door-to-door garbage collection system.
The workers demanded that the decades-old door-to-door household garbage collection system be continued and opposed handing over the work to private agencies.
They carried placards highlighting their opposition to the private agency system and sought protection of their existing work.
The protesters said they wanted to continue door-to-door garbage collection rather than be shifted to wage- or salary-based jobs.
Police detained several workers when they tried to proceed towards the Assembly and shifted them to a nearby police station.
