Hyderabad: Crossing the roads is going to become a lot easier in several busy spots in the city, courtesy 17 Foot over Bridges (FoB) that are being installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation at strategic locations.
The civic body officials have set a deadline of December this year to complete the construction of these FOBs being built with an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore. While all the FOBs have a lift, some of them will also have escalators.
“By the end of this year, construction of 17 FOBs will be completed. Works are underway at a brisk pace,” a GHMC official said, pointing out that the pedestrian facilities were spread across the city. Sunshine Hospital in Khajaguda, Omer Hotel in Chandrayangutta, Dilsukhnagar and St Ann’s High School in Secunderabad were four among the 17 FOB locations.
“Crossing the road becomes difficult especially during heavy traffic hours and also during the early hours when vehicles move fast. This issue will be addressed by FOBs as we can cross the road safely,” said Battula Mahesh Maher, a student.
Meanwhile, GHMC is also developing traffic islands and improving junctions with the works aimed at reducing traffic snarls and creating a transit for pedestrians crossing roads. The civic body has also decided to install signboards for the safety of pedestrians. These boards will alert drivers about pedestrian zones and pedestrian crossings. Civic body officials also said that in a phased manner, various other works pertaining to pedestrian safety would be taken up.
“Exclusive pedestrian crossings, footpath renovation, awareness campaigns on road safety measures along with Traffic Police and Transport department will also be taken up,” a GHMC official said.
