Gold, diamonds and cash worth nearly Rs 1 crore stolen from content creator’s home

A Kanyakumari-based content creator with over 4.5 lakh followers allegedly lost gold, diamond jewellery and cash worth nearly Rs 1 crore in a burglary at her home near Nagercoil while the family was away.

A Kanyakumari-based content creator has reportedly lost gold, diamond jewellery and cash worth nearly Rs 1 crore after burglars broke into her family home near Nagercoil.

Madhumitha, who has over 4.5 lakh followers on social media, is known for sharing glimpses of her family’s lifestyle online. Some of her videos have featured gold jewellery, cash and details about the family’s activities, including outings and travel.

The burglary reportedly took place at the family’s house near Nagercoil on Thursday evening while they were away. Police are investigating the incident and examining whether information shared on social media could have helped the suspects identify the house as a target.

The thieves reportedly escaped with around 118 to 120 sovereigns of gold jewellery, diamond ornaments and Rs 50,000 in cash. With one sovereign equivalent to approximately eight grams of gold, the stolen jewellery is estimated to contain between 944 and 960 grams of gold.

Madhumitha’s older social media posts have also attracted attention after the burglary. Several videos show her wearing gold jewellery or displaying cash, while some posts reportedly feature the family’s gold purchases. One resurfaced video shows her showering Rs 500 notes over her young child. Another older reel in which she spoke about keeping her valuables safe has also resurfaced.

As part of the investigation, police are reportedly examining her online activity to determine whether the burglars may have monitored her posts and gathered information about the family’s possessions or movements.

The incident has also sparked a debate online over influencers displaying their wealth on social media. Industrialist Harsh Goenka reacted to the incident by writing, “Burglary is wrong, period. But is your sympathy with her?”

Several social media users also weighed in on the incident. One user wrote, “Surprising that Income Tax didn’t reach her before the burglars!!”

Another criticised influencers who frequently display their wealth online, writing, “Absolutely no sympathy for influencers like these, they just flaunt their wealth just to gather attention and if something wrong happened with them they just play the victim card.”

Others defended Madhumitha’s decision to share her lifestyle online. One user wrote, “Of course. She accumulated tax paid wealth through talent. Immaturity may have led to flaunting wealth. But then it’s her life. Who are we to judge!”

Another commenter questioned the decision to showcase expensive possessions online, writing, “Good that happen… Why was that show off to be done… Many are living without a source of proper income, no roof or no food. She should learn from this.”
