Khammam: Even as the ruling Congress leaders tried to lure voters with cash and freebies, the BRS showed its presence in the just concluded gram panchayat elections in erstwhile Khammam.
The BRS supported candidates managed to overcome the Congress party’s tactics and won 121 sarpanch seats out of the 565 seats in Khammam. Congress won 372 seats, CPI (M)-25, CPI-11 and others won 36 seats.
In Kothagudem, the BRS supporters won 95 sarpanch seats out of the 467 gram panchayats where polls were held. Of the 471 GPs in the district, elections were not conducted for four seats due to various reasons. Congress won 267 seats, CPI-44, CPI (M)-13 and others won 48 seats in the district.
Responding to the election results, former BRS MP Nama Nageswara Rao stated that the results clearly show that the party chief K Chandrashekhar Rao and the BRS remain firmly rooted in the hearts of the people of Telangana.
He expressed confidence that a resounding victory would be possible in the upcoming MPTC and ZPTC elections if the party cadres work with the same unity and enthusiasm. The party leaders and workers should stay among the people, understand their problems and work to resolve them, he said.
Nageswara Rao noted that people in rural areas yearned for Chandrashekhar Rao’s leadership and had a strong desire to see the BRS government’s rule once more. The victory of the sarpanches, who contested and won with BRS support, despite the excesses of the ruling party, was a slap in the face for the ruling party, he said.
He praised the commendable struggle waged by the BRS cadres at the rural level to uphold democratic values despite facing pressure, threats and obstacles. The development that took place in the villages during the BRS rule transformed the face of the villages, he added.
