Hyderabad: A donor heart of a 23-year-old youngster Manohar Kola, a resident of Valigonda mandal, Yadadri Bhongir district, who was declared as brain dead by the attending team of neuro physicians, was flown to a private hospital in Chennai from Hyderabad in a chartered flight on Saturday.

The Hyderabad traffic police officials provided an exclusive green channel to transport donor heart from Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad, to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad, a distance of 35 km which was completed in 27 minutes, officials from state-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative, said. The ambulance left Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad at around 11.58 am and reached RGIA, Shamshabad by 12.24 pm.

On January 5, an unknown tractor had hit the two-wheeler on which Manohar was traveling in Valigonda mandal. The youngster received grievous injuries and was shifted to a local hospital. He was later shifted to Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad. Manohar was in ICU care for nearly 48-hours but as his health condition did not improve, the team of neuro physicians declared him brain dead on January 7 due to multiple trauma injuries including traumatic brain injury.

After a series of grief counseling sessions, taken up by Jeevandan and hospital officials, the family members of Manohar, including his father Somulu Kola and mother Vani Kola, decided to donate his organs for needy patients. The surgical teams retrieved two kidneys, one liver, heart, and transported the donor organs to various transplant centers, including the private hospital in Chennai for heart transplantation.
